The client

Runnings is a US-based retail chain offering a wide range of products across farm, home, outdoor, and work categories, serving customers through a strong network of physical stores.

The challenge

Runnings needed to modernise its digital experience to better support omnichannel retail, while managing complex pricing, store-specific inventory, and fulfilment across multiple locations.

Strategic highlights

The challenge

Runnings had built a strong brick-and-mortar business, but its digital experience struggled to keep up. Performance, usability, and scalability issues limited growth and fell short of both customer and internal expectations.

As ecommerce became more critical, Runnings set out to modernise its platform, improve order management, and create a seamless omnichannel experience connecting online and in-store journeys.

The solution

Vaimo delivered a full end-to-end transformation, rebuilding the frontend with PWA Studio on Adobe Commerce and modernising order management with Magento MSI. The solution integrates Horizon ERP and a customised Akeneo PIM, supported by microservices to ensure flexibility and scalability.

With a store-led fulfilment model, all orders are fulfilled from local inventory, supporting both home delivery and in-store pickup. Real-time stock visibility, advanced pricing, and an improved store locator now enable more relevant, localised customer experiences—helping digital play a stronger role in overall growth.

Looking ahead

Runnings continues to evolve its digital capabilities, with plans for expanded fulfilment options, improved personalisation, and enhanced search and promotions.

Ongoing enhancements to the Akeneo PIM will allow vendors to manage and upload product data directly, reducing manual work and accelerating time to market.

Key capabilities

Search, browse & filtering

A Klevu-powered search experience makes it easy for customers to find products, especially on mobile. Results are tailored to the selected store, with filters for category, brand, price, and real-time availability—ensuring relevance across a large and complex catalogue.


Store locator & selector

The store selector is central to the experience, connecting digital journeys with local stores. Customers see store-specific inventory, pricing, and promotions, making it easy to plan purchases and choose fulfilment options based on their nearest location.


Omnichannel pricing

A flexible pricing model supports both global and store-specific pricing. Using advanced pricing logic (including MAP and MSRP), product prices dynamically adjust based on location, ensuring consistency with local strategies and competition.


Multi-source inventory management

All stores act as fulfilment centres, powered by Magento MSI and custom allocation logic. Orders are routed efficiently based on factors like location and stock levels, helping optimise fulfilment and reduce operational costs.


Product information management

With over 110,000 products, Akeneo PIM provides a centralised and scalable solution for managing complex product data. Custom microservices support flexible product structures and ongoing growth, with continuous support from Vaimo.


Order management & fulfilment

A custom-built order management setup enables efficient routing and fulfilment across all locations. Customers can choose between home delivery and in-store pickup, with logic in place to optimise order allocation and delivery speed.


Core integrations & ecosystem

The platform integrates key systems and services, including Horizon ERP for business operations, Avalara for tax, and tools like Klevu, Yotpo, and Listrak to enhance search, reviews, and marketing performance.
